Carnak, or "*Carnak the Wise*" as he liked to style himself, was a powerful and well studied [[Wizard]] and member of the [[Order of Scribes]]. Carnak is notable for the roll he played in the release and modification/mutation of the [[Formless]] known as [[Illyria]], a discovery that also contributed to his eventual death.
# Early Life
---
Carnak was born to simple peasant farmers in a rural community. One of 6 children of his parents Carnak showed his unusual mind early in his life, often coming up with simple inventions, or modifying his families existing tools to better serve their purposes in ingenious ways.
When Carnak began to manifest an interest, and natural talent, for the arcane arts, his parents feared for his safety and made a deal with a traveling scholar to take the young boy somewhere where his gifts would be honored as the gifts that they were.
Against all reasonable odds, the young Carnak was neither abused nor sold for slavery but was instead taken with the Scholar and left with the local chapter of the [[Order of Scribes]] who quickly recognized the young boy's potential and value to their organization and set about training him as a [[Wizard]]
# Adult Life
---
During his time in the order, a young Carnak met and befriended the shy but brilliant [[Aria Morningstar]], another young member of the order, and formed a friendship that would last for decades.
Carnak's adult life focused on his arcane pursuits and research, both on behalf of both the order and his own interests, becoming the leading expert of a number of ancient empires and races
## Archeological Work
---
During his time with the order, Carnak uncovered fragments and rumors related to an ancient but immensely wise and powerful race, known as the [[Elder Ones - Overview]], whose mighty empire rose and fell to the dust of the ages before humanity first held itself upright.
This subject quickly consumed the young wizard and though he combed through every text the order could get its hands on, becoming the foremost expert on the subject without answering the questions that plagued him.

It was the discovery of one of the most intact examples of an Elder One city, and [[The Sleeper|the subsequent expedition]] and discoveries that came with it that truly gave Carnak some of the answers that he had been searching for through long years of research.
It was on this expedition that Carnak discovered the still active stasis prison containing the [[Formless]] prisoner who would come to be known as [[Illyria]]
