Subject:100159 caught Carnak’s attention almost immediately, distinguishing itself initially by completely consuming every other sibling in its cohort.
Carnak observed that this aggressive specimen displayed more enhancements than any previously produced through his breeding program. However, more than simply being a better killer, Carnak noticed that it appeared to change as it fed, seeming to integrate new traits and behaviors far more complex than those of a standard mimic.
Intrigued, Carnak constructed a special enclosure to house his new prize. Located at the bottom of his tower the enclosure consisted of a deep pit with vertical walls made of specially prepared stone which were enhanced to resist most types of magical damage as well as being slick and utterly smooth. The enclosure’s walls were designed to specifically resist the now alpha mimic’s abilities and prevent it from climbing out. A powerfully warded heavy steel door served as the enclosures primary access point while a trapdoor above, attached to a sharply slanted shoot made of the same enhanced stone, allowed Carnak to introduce various creatures and objects to the enclosure without risking direct exposure to his increasingly deadly pet.
Carnak took to testing the alpha’s abilities by feeding it novel prey and observing/recording the results. This pattern might have continued for an indefinite period of time had the accident not occurred and changed everything.
Although a brilliant and powerful mage of prodigious knowledge and experience, Carnak was not without his flaws, the most significant of those being a hubristic streak so profound it might well have been his most salient trait. Additionally, Carnak had discovered a method of extracting and processing a unique extract produced by Subject:100159. During the processing phase this extract was imbued with raw arcane energy, with the end result being a powerful arcane narcotic. Although Carnak initially regarded this substance as a curiosity, harboring hopes of using it for treatment of magically induced pain, he quickly became addicted and lost all control.
